Notes |
- From "The Bigelow Family Genealogy" Patience Bigelow:
"Concerning the English ancestry of Mary Warren, wife of John Biglo, there has been much misrepresentation and confustion. It was the fashion in the late 1800's to "prove" that one's family was descended from the royal houses in Europe, and the Warren genealogy published about this era was no exception. Gilman Bigelow Howe, though probably doubtful as to the Warren genealogy's veracity quoted extensively from it giving Mary Warren's lineage back to the sixth century -- surely an impossibility to prove by document.
Some years later the NEHG Register publised an excellent article quoting from actual parish and probate records. The article, while not exactly denying any pretentions to royalty for the Warren family, did point out that one cannot prove Warren ancestry in England more than one hundred years preceding John and Margaret Warren's arrival in America. The provable generations immediately preceeding John Warren's removal from England to America in no way correspond to the three generations "proved" as listed in the Appendix of Howe's book.
John and Margaret Warren are clearly listed on ship's lists on their arrival in the New World. While undoubtedly their four surviving children came with them, the children are not mentioned as passengers. They came from Nayland, Suffolk, England where seven baptisms and three burials indicate the size of their family. No marriage record exists for John and Margaret."
