"William, the ancestor of all who have borne this surname in Hing. and vic. by birth was prob. from the western part of England, where, according to tradition, one or more of his dau's was m. The precise date at which he came to New England is unknown. It is certain, however, that he was a resident of Dorchester as early as 1635, and prob. a widower as no mention is made of his wife either upon Dor. or Hinghams records. The foll. parcels of land were granted to him at Dor. in 1637, viz, :"..."

William Lane of Dorcester
Unto Thomas Rider my Sonne in Law, & dau. Elizabeth his wife, my new dwelling house in Dorchester with all the outhousing, garden, etc, only to & for the use of my day. & her children forever[?]: except my great Lott within the great Lotts of Dorchester within Pale and without, estimater 24 acres more of lesse, weh I give unto dau Mary Long; also such personal estate as i dye possesed of shall by my executors be thus distributes; unto sonne Thomas Linckhorne of Hingham, 8 pounds in silver; unto Sonne George Lane of Hingham, 8 pounds; sonne Nath Baker of H. 8 poounds, sonne Andrew Lane of H. 8 pounds. the discharge of the Legacyes in Silver aforesaid 60 pounds, due unto me upon Bill from Mr. John Glover, the remainder of the bill after 32 pounds, in Legacyes (being Twenty Eight) I give unto Mary Long, my dau. together with all my personal estate, except one standing bedsteen in the Parlor, also one table and one chest in the house, and also two fatts in the Leantoo to wett Barly in, weh I give unto my sonne Rider, & his wife to Remaine at the house, unto Mary Long all my Cattle, haye, Corne, mault, swine, Pewter, brase, beding, & all my Estate; funeral charges and Legacyes being discharged; unto ffredome Kingley, who hath been my faithful Servant, 20 shillings. Mary Long to have liberty in my dwelling house after my decease for the Removall of hirselfe * goods fro thence, such time as my executors thinke convenient, not exceeding sixe moneths after the day of my Buriall also such liberty in the Barne & upon the Land at all; in case i dye in such Season as the Land is to be planted or Sowne, he have liverty so to doe, & she have liberty to Reape & take what was by me planted or Sowne. Louing Brother Josephe ffarnsworth & Julia Wiswall executors. 20 12mo 1650.
