From letter with John Bemis's pension records:
"The data furnished herein are obtained from the papers on file in the Revolutionary War claim for pension W. 23552, based upon the military service of John Bemis in that war.
John Bemis, the son of John, was born about 1755 in Sudbury, Worcester Co., MA.
While residing in Sudbury, MA, he enlisted in 1775, served as a private and corporal in Captain Aaron Haynes' Company, Colonel Jonathan Brewer's Massachussets Regiment, length of service eight months; he removed with his father and family to Winchendon, Worcester Co., MA, and enlisted there in the summer of 1778 and served three months in Captain Bowington's (probably short for Boynton) Company, Colonel Sparhawk's Massachussets Regiment.
About 1780, he moved to Springfield, VT, resided there until 1808, when he moved to the state of New York, where he died in August 1828.
The soldier m. April 28, 1778, Lucy Bates. Their marriage was recorded on the records of the town clerk of Winchendon, MA.
Soldier's widow,Lucy, was allowed pension on her application executed Sept. 11, 1847, at which time was aged eighty-six years and resided in Rocester, Windsor Co., Vt. with her son James having lately moved from NY State.
They had 13 children as follows:John; Lucy; Abigail; Amos; Anna; Sally; Telotis died, date not given; another son Telotis; Nathan; Merial; James B.; Thankful; and an infant not named.
In 1847, James B. Bemis, than aged 49 and a resident of Rocester, VT, stated that he was a son of John and Lucy Bemis.
The soldier had brothers and sisters as follows; Isaac, Jonas, Jason, Silas, Amos, Reuben, Abigail, Sarah, Abel, and Joel. Jonas, Silas and Amos Bemis also served in the Revolutionary War.
Silas Bemis moved with the soldier to Springfield, VT, in 1780, where he remained until 1848, when he moved to Haverhill, NH. In that year he stated that he was aged 88. He had a daughter Olive who married James Glynn.
In 1848, David and Enos Brown, aged respectively 62 and 60, and both residing in Springfield, VT, stated that Lucy Bemis was a sister of their mother."
From John Bemis's pension record:
"On the 11th day of November, 1847 formally appeared before the ? the Probate Court of the district of Hartford aforesaid. Lucy Bemis a resident of Rocester in said district aged 86 years, who being first sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefits of the act of Congress .... that she is the widow of John Bemis, Jr. alias John Bemis who lived in Winchendon in the state of MA in the time of the Revolution and by her said husband she had 13 children whose names were John, Lucy, Abigail, Amos, Anna, Sally, Zelotis who died and they had an other which they name Zelotis with Nathan, Merial, James, Thankful and then one other who died so young they had not named it, and she now resides with her said son James, having lately come there from the state of New York, but soon after the was aforesaid the removed to Springfield in said District and resided for many years when she removed to the state of New York.
She further declares that her said husband during the Revolutionary War was out in the United States service as private and corporal three tours or more and served in the Militia part of the time and part of the time, she thinks, in the Continental Army, and served in all as she believes from two to three years and was under the command (if her memory serves her right) of Capt. Hanes, a part of the time but from her old age and the consequent loss of memory, she cannot now be more particular as to the officers he served under in the length of time he served.
She further declares that she was married to the said John Bemis Jr. alias John Bemis in the 28th day of April, 1778; that her name before marriage was Lucy Bates and that she was married by the Revd Mr Brown at sd Winchendon and that her husband the aforesaid John Bemis Junr alias John Bemis died on the . day of August 1828 and that she has remained a widow ever since that period as will more fully appear by reference to the proof hereto annexed"
