Brutality by a Father
Henry Hanwell, a draper's assistant, of Denby, was charged, at the instance of the National Association for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, with having committed an aggravated assault upon his son, Charles Henry Hanwell, 11 years old, at Denby on the 12th July. -- Mr. J Carrington, prosecuted, and in opening the case said the assault took place on the 12th July, and the reason these proceedings were not instituted before that was that the defendant had only come out of gaol on Friday, he having been serving a month's imprisonment for neglect of family. On the 12th July the lad was playing with a companion outside his grandfather's house, at Goose green, Denby, when the defendant, without the slightest provocation, threw a boot at him. He followed this up by throwing some stones and then knocked him down and kicked him severely. An inspector of the society took the lad from the defendant's custody, and found him so emaciated that he only weighed 50 lbs; and since he had been in the custody of the inspector he had gained 16 lbs. -- Dr. McGregor, of Penistone, proved that he examined the lad on the 20th July, and found on him five wounds on the back and arms and a black eye. The wounds on the back had been caused by kicks. -- The boy, Charles Hanwell, said he was 12 years old and during the last 12 months had been living with his father and mother at his grandfather's house at Goose Green. About a quarter to five o'clock on Friday, July 12, he was playing with Spencer Norton near his grandfather's house, when his father came and threw two or three stones and a boot at him, but did not hit him. He thought his father wanted him and went towards him, and he immediately knocked him down, and kicked him in the middle of the back. His father went indoors, and witness followed and sat down crying, and his father then struck him over the left eye and knocked him down, and again kicked him on the left arm, on the left shoulder, and on the back. The injuries still caused him pain. -- Spensor Norton, 1? years of age, corroborated. -- Harry Austen, of Wakefield, inspector of the society, proved that he took the boy into his custody on the 13th July, and found him badly bruised and much emaciated. He weighed then 13 lbs below the average of boys of his age, and in 14 days he gained 1? lbs. == Mr. Taylor said the defendant was liabse?? month's imprisionment. He had just server one month for neglect of family, and if he came before these ? he would be sent to gaol for the full term. The ? case was a very bad one, and defendant would be sent to gaol for two months with hard labour.

The Theft of a Purse
Henry Hanwell (44), draper, was charged with stealing a leather purse, containing 3 pounds 10s, and two postage stamps, the property of Mary Boyes, on November 5, 1895. Mr. R. H. V. Wragge prosecuted. The purse was lost during an auction sale. Prisoner was seen in the room, and, though he was short of money previous to that day, he had sufficient to make a number of purchases of clothing and to have a sovereign changed on the following day. When arrested and charged with the offence prisoner denied having been near the place, but subsequently stated that he had found the purse on the floor at the entrance way. -- The prisoner set forth this plea in a lengthly address, but the Recorder, addressing the Jury, said that whilst it was perfectly legitimate for a person to keep anything which he could discover no owner for, it was unlawful for him to keep an article, the ownership of which inquiries might disclose. The prosecution's inference was that prisoner had taken the purse from prosecutrix's pocket. Prisoner's defence was that he had found the purse. To his (the learned Recorder's) mind there was little difference between the two. -- A month's hard labour.
