Notes |
- From "John Dornblaser of Brooke Co., (West) Virginia: Recovering an Identy and Uncovering a Scandal" David L. Greene. National Genealogical Society Quarterly:
Dunblazier tradition states that Susanna had married before. It is unlikely, in this society at least, that the children of John and Susanna would have used the surname of her previous husband as an alias; hence, it seemed probable that Barnet was Susanna's maiden name. The date of birth of John and Susanna's son William suggests that their affair began in Pennsylvania. Therefore, Barnets were sought in Northhampton County records. A number were found, of whom the most likely appeared to be a group in Easton. The patriarch was Henry Barnet, the records of whose estate began in 1801 and whose first name seemed significant because John and Susanna named their second son Henry.
These Barnet estate records provided the final evidence for the conclusion that John Dornblaser of PA and John Donblazer of (West) Virginia were identical - by showing Susanna Barnet's connection with the family that the Dunblaziers vaguely remembered as "Yeaw or Yew." The inventory of the estate of Henry Barnet, a tanner of Easton, was taken on 27 October 1801. Eleven days earlier, his widow Susanna had renounced her claim to administer his estate and William and John Barnet had been appointed the administrators. The submitted their account on 16 February 1803. Many years later, a suit was filed on behalf of Henry and Susanna's daughter, who identified herselg therein as "Susanna Yohe, formerly Susanna Barnet."
The younger Susanna's petition provides considerable information about her legal husband and her family. Presented at the Northampton County Orphans' Court on 26 January 1822, it states that Henry Barnet died about 1801, leaving the following heirs: Susanna, widow; Willaim Barnet, sin; John Barnet, son; Susanna, daughter, who married Jacob Yohe; Elizabeth, daughter, who married Conrad Bittenbender, and the chiildren of another daughter, Mary, who married Adam Yohe.
