Notes |
- "Born in Missouri in 1833, Peter J. Stice, Jr. came to Clark County with his parents in 1850. He grew up in the Washougal area and on October 26, 1867 was married to Mary Louise Calder. Her father, John Calder, was a Hudson"s Bay Company employee, and had come to Ft. Vancouver from the Red River Settlement in Manitoba. Her mother was Mary McKay who, after John Calder's death, married William Dolan. Mary Louise was born on December 6, 1847, in Washington.
"During the Indain Wars of 1855/56, Peter served with Captain William Kelly, Company 'A' of the Washington Volunteers, Mounted Scouts, from October 26, 1855 until February 2, 1856. He was then a musician under Captain J.G. Maxon. His service records show that in 1856 he was 22 years old, 5'11" tall, black hair, black eyes, dark complexion and was a farmer born in Missouri. He registered his cattle mark with the Clark County Clerk: a squre crop on each ear and an underbit in the right ear.
"The Stices were members of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Vancouver and records of their children's baptisms can be found in the diary of Rev. Albert Nicholson. Peter was employed in the Sunnyside district as a constable for several years." -from the Clark County Pioneers
