Notes |
- From "History of the Town of Hingham, Mass." George Lincoln 1982
"Clement, aged 40 yrs. with Anna his wife, who also was 40 yrs. of age, and 5 children embarked at London for New England, Apr. 6, 1635, in the ship "Elizabeth" of which William Stagg was master. He came to Hingham about the time Rev. Peter Hobart and his followers arrived, and on the 18th of Sept. 1635, received a grant of land on Town (South) St. This lot contained five acres, and was bounded on the N.E. by George Russell, and S.W. by Thomas Johnson. It was the fifth in number from Bachelor (Main) St. and has been in possession of the descendants of the original grantee for nearly 2 and a half centuries. In 1883 the estate including the ancient dwelling house known as the "Anchor Tavern," was sold to the owners of the land adjoining. A portion of the estate, however, has since been repurchased; and on the spot where the old house stood a dwelling of modern style has been erected, which is occupied by a descendant.
The name Bate was a common one in England for nearly 2 centuries before the Puritans took their departure for New England, and the ancestors of Clement are traceable for 5 generations prior to that period."
Occupation tailor.
