Notes |
- []
On August 30, 1743 he obtained a land grant of 1,834 acres, there is a deed dated May 27, 1747 to William Hatcher of Dale Parish conveying 376 acres of land on Deep Creek. He owned about 2500 acres in that portion of Henrico County which became a part of Chesterfield County in 1749, where he became an extensive planter and slave owner. In 1760, on a plot of the land patented in 1743, he built the historic "Halfway Tavern" so-called on account of its location being halfway between the cities of Richmond and Petersburg, Va. It was a well-known hostelry in Chesterfield Co, and the old estate consisted of a hotel, restaurant, and Colonial race-track.
The records show that General George Washinton frequently attended the horse races held on the old "Halfwa" property. General Benjamin F. Butler, the Union officer, established his headquarters in the front yard of the Half-way Tavern while operating in that part of Virginia during the Civil War, 1861-1865. The taavern remained in the Hatcher family almost continuously from 1760 to 1934. It has since been thoroughly renovated and is now kept as a "showplace".
William , of Dale Parish, died in 1770, and his will is recorded in Chesterfield County, will Book 2, page 122. His will names six children, the oldest of whom was Edward.
