| Notes |
- There are several Lockwood families in the area around this time so it is not definite that the John Lockwood in Cawthorne moved to Denby,
but it does look like the family moved around 1732/3 based on the children's names. Following is the evidence.
1. The John Lockwood family appears to have left Cawthorne around that time since the last parish register entry was for the baptism of
Joseph, in 1732. There are a couple of baptism's after that for an apparently different John Lockword identified as a gardener.
2. There is little for the name Lockwood in the Penistone register for Denby before 1733 when John, son of John was baptised.
3. John in Cawthorne had 5 daughters, one of which died in Cawthorne (Mary) and the other 4 appear to have gone to Denby/Penistone --
Elizabeth, dau of John was buried there, and Hannah, Ann and Sarah, were married there. John's sons also appear to have moved (e.g. William
who could be the William who married Mary Roebottom in Penistone in 1746).
The one piece of conflicting evidence is that John, son of John Lockwood was baptized in Cawthorne in 1725 and there was a John, son of
John baptized in Denby in 1733. However, there appear to have been multiple John Lockwoods in Denby since there are three wives of John
Lockwood buried there in the next few years (Ann in 1746, Mary in 1774 and another Mary in 1779). It's not clear who was the wife of the
John Lockwood in Cawthorne, if any of them, probably Ann. The John Lockwood who was baptized in 1733 was likely the son of John &
Martha Thewlis who married in Penistone in 1733.
There was a baptism in Denby in 1710 for Jonathan, son of Johis (likely John). It's possible that this is the John Lockwood that was in Cawthorne
starting around 1712/3. In other words, maybe John got married, relocated to Cawthorne (or changed churchs) and relocated back around
1732. The open question is where did John get married to Ann (or whoever). There is a marriage between John Lockwood and Ann Atkinson
in Huddersfield in April 1710, 10 days before Jonathan was baptised in Denby which is a possibility. Huddersfield is around 10 miles away
from Denby.
