Excerpts from THE HISTORY OF THE WATTENBARGER FAMILY compiled by Mr C G Wattenbarger, July 7, 1964: full history is in our files, but mostly refers to Wattcnbargers who remained in Tennessee after Adam had left.

According to history the Wattenbargers came from the Rhine Valley Germany in 1791 to Pennsylvania on the boat SHIRLEY. James Allen was Captain of the boat. There were 288 passengers aboard. According to history a Mrs Wattcnbrrger and her five sons came over on the boat SHIRLEY. The sons were all under sixteen except two. Michael and John George were sixteen or older.

Some members of the family came south to Virginia and North Carolina, while others remained in Pennsylvania where they engaged in the tannery business and in the manufacture of fine dress shoes for women. Some of the descendants of the Wattenbargers who settled in Virginia came to upper East Tennessee. They ware three brothers, Solomon, Adam and Jacob. Solomon settled in Washington County, and Adam and Jacob settled in nearby Greene County. Some of the descendants went to Illinois and some of them went to Texas, where they were engaged in farming. Some of the Texas Wattenbargers were musicians.

Jacob Wattenbarger---one of the brothers who settled in Greene County, was a farmer. He had a son, Jacob, Jr, who was a preacher, and who located in Misssouri. Jacob, Jr continued to preach and became a wealthy farmer. During the Civil War he took a strong stand for the Union. At one time, while speaking for the side of the Union, he was pelted with eggs by the Rebels. Jacob Wattenbarqer had another son, named Chris, who settled in California and became a very prosperous rancher and dairyman.

Adam had a son named Jacob who settled in Bradley County---Jake had a son named Adam who settled in Roane County Tennessee near Rockwood who was a merchant. Adam of Roane County had a son named Jake, who was killed in a mine.

Solomon---the other of the three brothers who came to upper East Tennessee, settled in Washington County where he was a successful farmer. He also taught school in Washington County. Solomon had six sons. Adam, the oldest son, remained in Washington County.

Peter Wattenbarger, son of Solomon, was born in 1797. He Has married to Peggy Sliger. To this union were born four sons, Christopher C, Peter Jr, Thomas and Jackson and five daughters----Mrs Dudley Fields---. Peter Wattenbarger was a blacksmith apprentice by trade. He could make anything that could be made in a blacksmith shop at that time. He could read and write and kept his own books.

Mrs Dudley Fields lived in Nevada where her husband was a miner. At her death she left four small children, two sons and two daughters. The children car back 60 Tennessee where they lived with their grandfather, Peter Wattenbarger, Sr.

From Barnes Family Tree on rootsweb.com:

Much information in this research is not documented but is either backed up with dependable research or family ledgend. It is thought that John John Adam Jr.Wuertemberger was the second child of John Adam and Anna Maria Wuertemberger born 22 February 1760 in Berks County Pennsylvania. In 1781 he was a private in George Reim's Company, First Regt.,Berks County, Pennsylvania Militia. On 13 May 1785 he was recorded in the class roll of Peter Cower's Company, First Berks County Militia. Indications lead to the idea that he was married to Elizabeth Frentzler about 1873. In the 1790 Federal Census he appears in Cumru Township, Berks Co., with two males under 16, two males over 16 and one female over 16. Records of three Churches establish the birth of William, Adam and Anna Maria, the first three children of John Adam Jr. but his wife is not named in any of the records. The death of his daughter, Anna Maria, is recorded there also.

The last records of the Wuertemberger family in Reading were around 1792. It is thought that Adam Wattenbarger ( another spelling change) later found in Washington County Tennesee is our Adam. According to his will of 15 Oct 1820 his wife was Elizabeth and his two older children were William and Adam. Other children named in the will are: Jacob, Peter, Solomon, Michael, Frederick, George, Samuel, Elizabeth, Sally.
