John Crowson, born Bef 1725 in Accomack, VA; died Abt 1780 in Richmond, NC. He was the son of 1600. William C. Crowson and 1601. Comfort Littleton.

      Notes

!per Elton Crowson -born abt 1717/18 Wife's name may be Sarah, had 6 children.

!birth bef 1725: Bill Crowson 1/1997

!From Bill Crowson 1/1997----Evidence suggests that he left VA and moved to NC possibly to Johnston Co. This probably occurred before 1757, for in the division of his father William's estate that year, John's part is left in the hands of the administrator, indicating that he was no longer present in VA. (Accomack Co. Circuit Court Mixed Records, 1757 -1762, p. 5 -copies in possession of Katie Park and Bill Crowson) There is a record of a land patenet of 200 acres to John Crowsson on 1/27/1755 in Johnston Co. NC. ("Colony of NC 1735 -1764, Abstracts of Lanc Patents, Vo. 1 by Hofmann, p. 34)according to notes of Elton Crowson. (another source shows it being on p. 85, item #4792 of this same Vol). His notes also indicate a deed of James Nicholson Sr. to John Crowson, both of Granville Co., NC of 300 acres on 1/16/1764 (from "Warren Co.NC Records, "Vol. II, by Kerr) Granville Co., was on the VA border, and Johnston Co. was just south of it. Warren Co. was later formed from Granville co. John Crowson is listed as a taxpayer in Bute co. in 1766 ("NC Taxpayers, 1769-1790," p. 49, by Ratcliff, per notes of Elton Crowson). Then on 1/17/1775, John Crowsson sold 150 acres to Thomas Eaton(both of Bute Co.) in Bute Co. (formed from Granville Co.). This latter transaction raises a problem, for according to other land transactions listed below, John was in Anson Co. by 1771. Possibly he did not sell his Bute co. land until after moving to Anson Co. Jno. Crowson is listed as a clerk on page 758 of "Capt. Simon Herring's Company, Johnston co. NC 10/7/1755," according to notes of Elton Crowson. Most of the children listed under him have not been absolutely verified as being his children, but evidence strongly suggests such.
Ltr. from Dorothy C. Sarradet (descendant) of Port Allen, LA, to Joanne Fowler Wall of Whiteville, NC dated 10/8/80, states:
"...this is what I think: John Crowson Sr., of Anson City, NC married Mary Terry and had: John , Jehucal, Wm. K., Nancy B. and Sina..."
(Copy of this ltr. in possession of Elton Crowson).
In 1770 John Crowson, along with many other inhabitants of Anson Co., NC signed a petition to the Governor for a court to be established at Campbellton for Anson, Orange, and Cumberland Counties ("Anson Co., NC, Abstracts of Early Records," p. 133). The following land transactions are found in Richmond Co., NC, Deed Books:
1771 - Samuel Wise and Betty Wise to John Crowson, Anson Co. (copies in possession of Bert Crowson and Bill Crowson)
1772 - Susanna Bell to John Crowson of Anson Co., witnessed by Jehucal Crowson and John Crowson Jr. (copies in possession of Bert Crowson and Bill Crowson) In the April 1772 session of Anson Co. Court Minutes, John Crowson is
listed as a juror, ("Abstracts of County Court Minutes, 1771- 1777," p.77) and in the 7/15/1772 session minutes, p. 78, he is listed as "overseer of road from Stephen Coles to Hitchcock's Cr. in room of Wm. Watkins..." In the 7/15/1774 session minutes, p. 94, he is listed in a group of people to work on a new road. In the minutes of the 7/9/1776 sessionof this court, p. 107, is this entry:
"Ord; that John Neil Crowson be overseer of road from the fork above Falling Cr. to Solomon's Creek." Then in the 1/14/1777 minutes p. 108, is an order that "Thomas Dockery and John Neil Crowson continue overseer of roads. " This John Neil Crowson might refer to John Sr., John Jr., or even to another John. The fact that the middle name does not apper previously would imply that it was meant to distinguish John Neil from the other John.
In the April 1777 minutes, p. 108, John Crowson is listed as a member of a grand jury. In 1777 John Crowson Sr.wrote: "for the love I bore my son Jehucal" conveys 100 acres north of Hitchcock Creek to his son Jehucal and to his grandson Elisha (Jehucal's son) "for their better maintenance together." Deed Bk. B, p. 261 In 1777 John Crowson Sr., is listed, along with John Jr. and William Crowson, as a witness to a deed of John Mathews to Jehucal Crowson (Richmond Co. NC Deed BK. C, p. 378). A later 4/20/1784 deed of John Crowson Jr. refers to an unrecorded deed made by John Crowson Sr. to his son John Crowson Jr. on 4/6/1778 (from notes of Carl Crowson of Huntsville, TX, as found in records of Robert L. Crowson). In 1779 in Anson Co., NC., John Crowson Jr. deeded back to his father, John Crowson Sr., 30 acres of land which were part of a larger parcel of 150 acres earlier deeded to him by his father. In her early research, Estelle Aman Crowson erroneouly believed the date of this deed to be 1729. This led her to the erroneous belief that John Sr. was the same person as a John born 1678 in Desford, England. Thus she erroneously thought this was the English connection of her family. It was not until the 1970's , when Dr. William L. Crowson and Elton Crowson were questioning the date of this deed, that they obtained a copy and found the date to be 1779.
This was a significant event in establishing the true ancestry of most of the Crowson's in America. Jehucal Crowsson was appointed administrator of the estate of John Crowsson in March Session 1780 of Richmond County Secretary of State's Office, Security by George Bounds and Henry Adcock. Copies in possession of Katie Park of Houston, TX, and Bill Crowson of Florence, AL.
